Daughter of Isis (Descendants of Isis, #1)
by Kelsey Ketch
Release Date: 10/26/13

“Her mouth parted slightly, waiting for Seth to breathe life into her own body, just like in the story. She wanted him to awaken her senses.”

Their worlds collide in California’s high desert.

The last thing Natara “Natti” Stone wants to do is to start anew at Setemple High School. She wished she had never left London. Yet the brutal murder of her maternal grandmother has made her life very complicated. The only clue related to her murder is an ancient, encrypted necklace Natti discovered after her grandmother’s death. And if trying to adjust to American life is not enough, Natti is being stalked by a mysterious, charming high school senior, Seth O’Keefe, who is annoyingly persistent in his attempts at seduction.

Seth O’Keefe is secretly a member of the Sons of Set, an order that worships the Egyptian god of chaos. Seth’s blessing from Set, his “charm,” never failed, except with one person: Natti Stone. Her ability to elude him infatuates and infuriates him, and he becomes obsessed with the chase. But the closer he gets to her, the more his emotions take a dangerous turn, and he risks breaking one of the most valued covenants of his order. The punishment for which is a fate worse than death.

The adventure this unlikely couple becomes engulfed in could cost them their lives and their souls.

My Review

I was really excited to read Daughter of Isis because Egyptian Mythology is something that has fascinated me and yet you don’t find many books based off of it.

While I was reading I actually was looking up different things about the mythology. I didn't really need to because it gets explained to the book and the book actually has more detail. Whether it’s combination of the different stories or a little embellishment to make the mythology fit the modern version doesn't matter to me. Mythology is what it is and I love when there is a modern take on it. I’m still fascinated and now I’m thinking oh I should ask my Egyptian friend about this, which I’m sure she will love. ha ha.

I enjoyed the plot, I thought it started off a bit slow. There was a little too much focus on Natti and Seth mind control issues. Once you hit the halfway mark though look out. Things really take off and your absorbed in the craziness that ensues. I couldn’t stop reading. I need to know what happens and was completely stressing out. It’s kind of like wanting to scream at the TV, don’t go through that door! Then ending totally leaves you in that kind of hanging state.

Natti is stubborn as a goat and interesting to boot. I love that she is from London and has an Egyptian heritage. For some reason my mind is like this is a perfect combination. I’m not sure why but it made her cool to me. I liked that she was adventurous too and kind of aware that something was really off with the town. Although there were moments when I was like, seriously Natti you have a collection of YA books and you don’t believe in a little magic. I think if the Seth was happening to me I would totally be on alert like, okay what his this guy... fey, vampire, Egyptian Gods disciple. Maybe not but I was kind of frustrated that she wasn’t even entertaining the idea. I liked her though, I also liked that she had a solid group of new friends. She wasn’t a loner girl sitting in the corner waiting to get noticed. There was also no she’s so pretty and doesn’t notice it games. Another plus for Natti, she could be cute if she wanted to but was comfortable being casual.

I’ve never read a book like this where the one of the main characters is a bad guy. I mean he actually is a bad guy not just everyone thinks he is but the rumors are not true. Seth has a gift, he is able to charm anyone into doing his bidding. It’s pretty powerful gift and he uses it for mostly getting girls to sleep with him. It’s like he slips them a roofie or some other kind of drug because then they get addicted and want more. They almost enjoy relinquish that control. The thing about Seth is that it’s almost like he doesn’t completely get how bad what he is doing is. He was raised in the mindset that this is his purpose in life and when Q and Ky point out to him that he is no different than someone who does slip a roofie into someones drink it’s like Seth is almost appalled at the idea. I thought I was never going to like him but I did because even though he wasn’t necessarily respectable. He is nothing like Ky and Q or even his father. Oddly enough the song “Dark Side” just came on and it definitely reminds me of Seth. He’s not perfect and I think he finds a new way of seeing things by being with Natti.

I really enjoyed the book and I’m going to have to read book 2 to find out what happens of course. It’s going to kill me otherwise!!
